The World Animal Health Organization (OIE) has declared India to be free from avian influenza (H5N1), a deadly bird disease. Joint Secretary, Animal Husbandry Department Upamanyu Basu gave this information by sending a letter to the Chief Secretaries of the states. Avian influenza virus affects humans. Many times death occurs due to severe suffering. The respiratory system is affected when suffering from it. Initially cold-cough and fever are its symptoms. The World Health Organization has issued a warning about this. Since 2017, the disease was spread sporadically in Gujarat, Odisha, Daman Diu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. In December 2018, the disease spread to 9 places in Odisha and 3 places in Bihar.

Avian influenza spread for the first time in the country during February to April in the year 2006 at 28 locations in Maharashtra and one place in Gujarat. About 10 lakh birds were killed during this period and compensation of Rs 2.7 crore was given. So far, the disease has spread to 225 places in 49 different states in the country, in which about 83.5 lakh birds have been killed and compensation amounting to more than 26 crores has been given. For the first time in the country in 2017, a new varusus H5N8 was reported in migratory birds and poultry in Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Punjab and Haryana.
